TRACK WATER SEEPAGE AT SEPANG INTERNATIONAL CIRCUIT UNDER INVESTIGATION

Use of industrial paper for drying in accordance with international practices

SEPANG, 18 July 2016 – Referring to reports that Sepang International Circuit (SIC) recently faced issues with water seepage on the track during a test session, the matter is currently under investigation. SIC is working with track design firm Dromo, which was involved in the recent track resurfacing, and our track maintenance contractor Nippon Road (M) Sdn Bhd, to investigate the cause and to ensure that such a situation does not recur.

The test session, conducted with riders from Ducati, Honda and Yamaha to provide Michelin with useful data ahead of the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix in October, was held on Friday, 8 July. On the day before - Thursday, 7 July, there had been a very heavy thunderstorm in Sepang, and we are investigating the impact this weather may have had.

Following the total resurfacing of the track and with the occurrence of heavy downpours, this presents an ideal opportunity to test the design and effectiveness of the new surface ahead of the upcoming 2016 FORMULA 1 PETRONAS MALAYSIA GRAND PRIX at the end of September and the Shell Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix at the end of October. This will allow all parties to observe, evaluate and take the necessary actions to further improve the track to the highest standards. Our top priority is to ensure that all track users get the best experience possible.

We would also like to clarify that the paper used was an absorbent industrial grade paper approved for use in standard track maintenance by FIM, and not paper towels as reported. This type of paper has also been used at other tracks to aid in drying the track.

SIC will share further details once the investigation is completed.
