Following the announcement by BMW Motorsport today that they are to axe the Formula BMW Series, Motorsport Asia who have been the Formula BMW Pacific Series Organiser and Promoter since its inception, announced the continuation of the Series in an independent form.

Gary Thompson topped the times in testing at Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia yesterday as the teenager from Donabate, Dublin began his final week of testing ahead of his car racing debut in the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific series next month.

In a late change of plans, Thompson has switched to Malaysian based E-Rain Racing squad for the coming season and the 16-year-old celebrated his change of team colours by setting the pace at the Formula One venue.

S&D Motorsports is proud to announce the addition of Danny Stacy Chau, the legendary Hong Kong race driver, to their 2009 Asian Touring Car Series lineup. He, along with longtime teammate, Man Ting Yu, will helm the newly registered IMSP/S&D Racing Team.

Patel Impeccable at Season Opener

The Season Opener of the Formula BMW Pacific was held at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia on 4-5 April 2009 as a support race to the Formula 1TM Malaysian Grand Prix. Two Indian drivers Aditya Patel of Atlantic Racing Team and E-Rain Racing’s Akhil Khushlani took part during the weekend.

Going into the first two Rounds, Patel was a little concerned as he had absolutely no testing or practice. He dove straight into the event and his team decided to get going cautiously. Patel managed to qualify a decent 10th and 11th for Rounds 1 and 2 respectively.

Formula BMW Pacific has confirmed the calendar for the 2009 season, the best compilation of race meetings in the series’ seven-year history.

The season will open in support of the 2009 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix in April, and close in spectacular fashion at the 56th Macau Grand Prix in November.

Meritus drivers testing at Sepang International Circuit (SIC) ahead of next month’s opening round of the Formula BMW Pacific showed they will once again be the team to beat.

Team champions for the last six years, Meritus Racing have completely dominated Formula BMW Pacific by also winning the Drivers’ and Rookie-of-the-Year crowns.

After three-days of driving round Malaysia’s Formula 1 track from last Tuesday, team owner Firhat Mokhzani said his boys have proven to be a second quicker than their rivals.

After just two years in karting, Fahmi Ilyas became the first Malaysian to confirm his participation in this year's Formula BMW Pacific season. The 16-year-old lad from Kuala Lumpur confirmed his spot on the grid after signing his debut season with Team E-Rain on January 12.

"I am very happy and excited to start the season. This is a transition year for me so it very important to do my best. I have already begun my testing and it has been great working with the team members," said Ilyas.

Haryanto the One to Beat in Formula BMW Pacific

Meritus Racing`s Rio Haryanto lit up Sepang International Circuit from Tuesday when he consistently posted the quickest laps during the final three days of testing ahead of next month's opening round of the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific season.

The 16-year-old from Solo, Indonesia, ended the three days of testing with a best time of 2:11.5 seconds, which was easily a half second quicker than his main rivals.
