The Malaysian round have always been recognised as the “hottest” race by any championship that makes the Sepang International Circuit (SIC) as one of its rounds.
Year after year you could see how the heat affects the drivers; some pass out from heat exhaustion as soon as they exit the car after a race.
After nine year Super GT have included Malaysia in its race calendar, team Nismo Autech GT-R thinks they have found a solution to help their drivers to keep cool.
Traditionally the drivers will wear a cool suit underneath their racing suits which cool water is circulated in a tube that covers the cool suit.
“It helps in certain countries but it’s almost useless here in Malaysia,” said Satoshi Motoyama.
Just for the Malaysian round of 2009 Super GT, the Nismo Autech car competition number 1 is going to race with an air-conditioning system on board.
“Just a little discomfort will distract us from driving at the fullest ability so this will help is concentrate and perform better in the race.”
According to Nismo President Yuichi Sanada the air-conditioning system used in the race car is similar to the production cars sold by Nissan.
“Although the system adds about 30kg of extra weight to the race car, it does not affect the car’s performance as we are able to take some ballast weight off to comply with the minimum weight ruling.”
He added that the only drawback from using the air-conditioning system is that it soaks away 2hp from the engine’s output.
“We considered the good and the bad side of running with the system onboard and the positive points outweighs the disadvantages that come with it.
