Sepang International Circuit Ready For S1K

04 June 2009, BY SIC

Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is set for the Sepang 1000KM (S1K) race happening this Saturday 6 of June.

The S1K race is a spinoff of the already successful Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) that has been going strong since year 2000.

This race has been created especially for the teams in Class B 1800ccand Class C 1600cc of MME.

To date 57 teams have registered for the S1K race with 32 cars in Class 1 for the 1800cc and 25 cars in the 1600cc Class 2.

Instead of 12 hours for the most laps teams have to achieve, now the teams will have to complete 182 laps (approximately 1008km) of the 5.543km track in the fastest time possible.

“This will be another exciting event with the introduction of a new twist into an old formula,” said SIC Chief Corporate Communications Officer Azlan Akil.

“Apart of the predetermined number of laps to complete instead of the maximum time they have, teams will also adapt to work with the controlled tyres, the Archilles 123. It will be a close race till the end.”

With just one more day before race day, teams have been testing vigorously on the track to get the best setup.

According to Fadzil Alang of team R3, they have settled the handling part of the car and moved on to tweaking minor hardware changes in the engine.

“There are still some testing we need to do before the team is satisfied with the engine’s performance,” explained Fadzil at track side amidst testing the car.

“So far have been working on small things like clutch and swapping cams,” he added.

Entrance to watch the race is free for race fans, the action starts as early as 9.45am on Saturday morning with the Supercars and Supersaloon race followed by Aston Martin race and finally rolling off with the S1K race at noon.
