With one more round and two more races to go, veteran racer Ian Geekie has established himself as firm favourite for the overall title at the 2008 Hong Kong Class Car Series, which will run as support races for the third round of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsports at Sepang Circuit this weekend.
With a total haul of 102 points and the Class B title already in the bag, Geekie, who drives a Datsun 240Z, has been in superb form in the series this season; going into the final round with a perfect record of poles, wins and fastest laps.
Geekie now has 102 points and has won Class B and is leading the Overall Championship with a still perfect record of Poles, Wins and Fastest Laps for the class for cars between 1801cc and 2400cc.
“Ian’s challenge for the overall title will naturally come from his best buddy Simon (Westbrook), who is currently leading Class O, which unlike Class B is still very close at the top,” said event coordinator Nick Thomas.
With 94 points, Westbrook, who races a TVR3000M machine, leads Bertie McCrory, who has 86 points. Paul Wickelmann is third with 60 points in a Caterham while Daniel Bilski is fourth on 58 points based on the total points collected after five rounds.
“However, if all competitors’ two worst race results are deducted – as provided by the race regulations – then, Ian and Simon share the lead for the Overall Championship with both on 84 points with Bertie close behind on 82. We should see an exciting finish to the season in Sepang,” added Thomas.
For Class C, Chia Poo Teng had already secured the class title after opening an unassailable lead at the top of Class C after Round 5 with 102 points. “It now remains for the other Class C competitors to fight it out for second and third and there are three drivers are in a position to do it,” said Thomas in reference to Nuredzwan, Roy Morgan and Rizal Faris, who have 57, 46 and 34 points respectively.
Class A for cars below 1800cc should see a tight race to the finish with Koh Hark Kwa and Mohd Farid currently tied at the top of the standings with 77 points. Mohd Zaaim Abu Bakar is third with 49 points.
Run as part of the 2009 Malaysian Super Series, the Hong Kong Classic Car Series has been incorporated in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsports in Sepang along with the Supercar, Supersaloon and the Supersixteen Championship, which also enter their final rounds this weekend.
The A1GP World Cup of Motorsports race in Sepang is promoted by Carbon Worldwide which also handles the commercial and promotional components of the event. Sepang International Circuit is handling the management of the race.
After two rounds, A1GP Team Malaysia leads the championship standings with five points and Fairuz Fauzy has been in impressive form and ready to take full advantage of the home race to score Malaysia’s first win in Sepang this Sunday.
