DOUBLE VICTORY FOR MOK AT MALAYSIAN GT SERIES

28 June 2010, By Sepang International Circuits

Two-time Malaysian Super Series champion Mok Weng Sun of Team Porsche Club Singapore Racing made a brilliant start in the new Malaysian GT Series as he romped to a double victory at Sepang Circuit today.

Mok, winner of the Supercar champion for 2008 and 2009, was in awesome form in his Porsche 997 GT3 Cup S; frustrating local hero Tunku Hammam Sulong and his mean Lamborghini LP560 to second place on both races.

Starting from pole, Mok – the 2008 Merdeka Millennium Endurance Race overall winner, lead from start to the chequered flag; taking 21 minutes 36.513 seconds to complete the 10-lap battle around the 5.543-km track.

It was a different in Race 2 when Mok had a poor start and had to trail Tunku Hammam until Turn 4 before he overtook him and took charge of the race. Mok then cruised to victory in 21 minutes 40.224 seconds with Tunku Hammam crossing the finishing line 2.16 seconds later in 21 minutes 42.390s.

Commenting on his victory, Mok said: “The race was not as easy as it seems and Hammam was challenging me all the way in both races. I am happy to win both races today.”

The new Malaysian Touring Car Challenge, which had only two entries for the opening round, was incorporated in the Asian Touring Car Series (ATCS) races where Harry Chai finished a creditable fifth and fourth in Race 1 and Race 2 respectively in his Honda EP3.

In a field of 16 cars that included Harry and Perajun Krishnan – the other MTCC entry, the opening race was won by Liu Lic Ka of Team IMSP while Race 2 was topped by Mak Ka Lok of RPM Racing Team.

Perajun’s participation in the MTCC ended prematurely after his Honda Integra DC2 had a broken gear box midway through in Race 1.

Round 2 of the MTCC would again be incorporated with the ATCS, which would be running two more rounds on July 18 and 19. Based on comments from Harry Chai, more entries are expected in Round 2 and the subsequent three rounds.

“I know that there are some who wanted to compete; but could not get their race cars ready on time for Round 1. There would be some more entries in the next round,” said Harry.

In the Supersixteen Championship, Damien Dielenberg – a double winner in Round 1 last month - scored another double victory; winning both Race 1 and Race 2 to take his total haul of 100 championship points with three more rounds to go.

“I had a good race and a good start in both races. I was lucky that the car were performing well and lasted through both races without any problems,” said Damien, who showered praises on his mechanics at Loon Power for preparing the car well.

“The team had prepared the car early and our mechanics did well in preparing the car. In every race, they would develop certain parts of the car to improve it in terms of engine or handling. They just did a great job for this weekend,” he added.

Round 2 of MSS also hosted the second round of the Bikerz Hi-Rev Cup, which recorded its highest entry of 54 riders. The opening race was won by former Malaysian Cub Prix champion Mohd Faisal Yahya while Race 2 was topped by two-time MSS 135cc Production Bike champion Ahmad Azhar Abdul Hamid.

The next round of the MSS would be held on July 18 and 19.
