Malaysian Super Series - Round 4 - Cars
Malaysia’s top saloon car driver Boy Wong Yew Choong joined Australian Brent Odgers and Mohd Syahnas Shahidan as Malaysian Super Series (MSS) 2008 champions as he clinched the Supersaloon Championship crown at the penultimate round in Sepang today.
Boy, winner of the Supersixteen Championship for 2006 and 2007, won his first Supersaloon title in style by winning the opening race and a cool second place in Race 2 at Round 4 to take unassailable lead in the 2000cc championship with 145 points.
At Round 4 of the bike competitions yesterday, Odgers took his third Superbike overall title to the ones he won in 2003 and 2007 while Mohd Syahnas of Chequered Motorsports took the 600cc Supersports crown with one more round to spare.
“It’s simply amazing. Now, I can concentrate fully on defending my Supersixteen title,” said Boy, who is also in prime position to win a third successive Supersixteen title after winning both races in the battle of the 1600cc machines.
Lady luck was clearly with Boy, who was promoted to first in the opening race of the Supersixteen Championship after Ian, his closest challenger was slapped with a 30 second penalty that demoted him from first to 11th position. Starting from 11th on the grid for Race 2, Ian was caught in a crowded group and was brilliant to finish Race 2 in fifth position.
With one more round to go and just a maximum of 40 more points to win, Boy leads the Supersixteen Championship with 110 points and a 29-point advantage over Ramesh, who has 81 points. Ian is third overall with 68 points and out of the championship battle.
“It’s the best position to be; but the title is not won yet. So, we approach Round 5 with caution and as always, we would go for a win,” said Boy, who clearly remembered Round 3 where he failed to finish both races with mechanical problems.
The Supercar Championship would be going to the wire with Malaysian Wira Dani Daim taking a huge step towards winning his first MSS title by winning Round 4 and scoring a massive psychological victory over two-time champion Dilantha Malagamuwa and Singaporean Mok Weng Sun of Team Porsche Club Singapore.
After a mediocre third place in the opening race that saw a major incident at the start, Wira Dani bounced back to win Race 2 to collect 32 points from Round 4; taking his total haul to 127 points against Dilantha’s collection of 105 points; putting him in third place. Mok is second in the overall standings with 107 points.
In a combined race of Supercar and Supersaloon competitors, 2006 Supersaloon champion Soh Kee Koon collided with debutant Doris MacCarthy at Turn 1; forcing the race to be red-flagged and re-started under drizzling rain.
Tunku Hammam Tunku Sulong won the opening race; but was unable to sustain that momentum in Race 2 where he was clearly affected by his choice of wet tyres on the drying track in the second race.
“We have good results today and I am really looking forward for the final round in November. Hopefully, we can win it this time after failing to do it last year,” said the Fugazi Racing team leader.
Round 5 for the car competitions would be run as support races at the A1GP Malaysian Round in November.
