Determined to score a historical double at the 2007 Malaysian Super Series, Malaysia’s top driver Boy Wong Yew Choong has opted to compete in the Supersaloon Championship over the 1600cc class at Round 4 at Sepang Circuit this weekend.

Second behind Eddie Lew, Boy said he and his Type R Racing Team was ‘hugely confident’ overcoming that the five-point deficit and would enter the final round on December 2 on top of the points standings for both the Supersaloon Championship and Supersixteen Championship.

“I would not say it’s a gamble. Instead, it’s a strategy adopted by the team to ensure the best ever results for us,” said Boy, who is the defending champion in Supersixteen Championship for the 1600cc machines.  

Slotted as support races for the A1GP Malaysia, the supersaloon and supersixteen races as well as the supercar championship would run together as the race organizers had time constraint within the three days of the event from November 23 to25.

Apart from the main A1GP races which included the sprint race and feature and the JPM Integra Cup Malaysia, the A1GP Malaysia World Cup of Motorsports would also run the single-seater junior formula Petronas Formula Xperience.

With a 60-point advantage over second placed Harry Chai in the Supersixteen Championship, Boy will be ensured top spot in the final round as the JC Racing driver could only managed a maximum of 40 points if he were to win both races this weekend. 

“It’s very important for the team to win the Supersaloon title as well because we are the defending champions. We want to keep both titles again this year,” said Boy, in reference to his team-mate Soh Kee Koon.

Currently third in the point standings with 67 points, Kee Koon won the title; overtaking then championship leader Jimmy Low of JC Racing in the final round after the former Supercar champion passed away before the round.

It was a heartbreaking experience for JC Racing team manager and Jimmy’s close friend, Jacky Ng, who had engaged the services of Malaysia’s top saloon car driver Eddie Lew in a campaign that he called ‘Winning It For Jimmy’.

Second behind Boy in the opening two rounds, Eddie took advantage of a rare mechanical failure for Boy in Round 3 to win the round, taking over the championship lead and declaring he is ready to keep it until the end of the season.

“It’s an emotional campaign for us at JC Racing. Jimmy was a key member to the team and a close friend to many of us. We definitely will go out to defend this lead and win the title,” said Eddy, winner of the Supersixteen title in 2003.

For the Supercar Championship, Malaysia’s Wira Dani Daim would be going all out to overturn a three-point advantage currently enjoyed by Sri Lankan Dilantha Malagamuwa, who is also the defending champion.
