The competition gets hotter at second round this Saturday

The 2011 Sepang Drag Battle enters its second round at Sepang Circuit this Saturday (May 7); promising yet another thrilling showcase of driving skills speed and engineering brilliance as Malaysia’s top drag racers gathers for another showdown blazing speed.   

“As always, we can expect another great event this Saturday. It’s Round 2 and it’s time to stamp further authority in the championship as well as an opportunity to make up for lost grounds,” says Sepang International Circuit Chief Executive Officer Dato Ahmad Razlan Ahmad Razali.  

“2011 marked the seventh edition of this prestigious event and over the years, it had provided plenty of thrills for the fans of drag racing. I know for a fact that it’s a big event for Malaysia’s top high performance workshops as they put their skills to test against each other.     

“It’s the only drag race on a proper racing circuit and SIC is the only drag venue with full safety aspects for both racers and spectators … Sepang Drag Battle has always been the best in terms of competition, spectatorship and accuracy of the timings. And, it’s the only drag racing event sanctioned by the motorsports governing body, AAM … making Sepang Drag Battle really special to the community,” Razlan added.

A five-round championship as in previous years, the new season opened on March 19 with Ikmy Adzwan Jamuri scoring a double victory – winning Class C for two-wheel drive natural aspirated cars up to 2,000cc cars; and Class F, for the non V-tech engines street-legal cars.

With the wins, Ikmy now leads the two championships with five points. For Class C, he holds a two-point advantage over Mohd Iqbal Ismail Tajinder while Ahmad Firdaus Azman is third and a point further behind. In the other class F, Mohd Tuah Kamarudin and Ismarizan Ishak, who has three and two points respectively.

The open Class A is currently topped by topped by Suzaini Ahmad, who should again start as favourite in Round 2. In winning the opening round, Suzaini drove his fully modified Daihatsu to a blazing 10.985 seconds in covering the 402-meter stretch to win the finals and beat Hairul Izane Mohammad Ashor in a fully modified Proton Satria.   

The other Class F for street legal cars with V-tech engines is led by Mohd Iqbal Ismail, who holds a three-point advantage over his third-placed brother, Mohd Iqram, who has two points. Khairul Anwar Ahmad is sandwiched between the siblings with three points.

For class B for two-wheel drive cars without any limit on engine capacity but with limited forced inducation, the category is led by seasoned campaigner Ahmad Mamduh Mohamad with five points. Mohd Ainul Azri is second with three points and Mohamad Fairus Jamaluddin has two points.

Registration of participants would be done on the event day on Saturday itself from 5pm to 7pm. Track activities would start from 9pm and is expected to run past midnight.

Tickets for the 2011 Sepang Drag Battle are priced at RM10 for seats at the Main Grandstand and RM50 for access to paddock and the pitlane. Parking is charged at RM5 for cars and RM2 for bikes.
