SIC Targets Night Race Next Year

21 January 2008, BY New Straits Times

The 10th edition of the Petronas Formula One Malaysia Grand Prix on March 21-23 is likely to be the last daytime race.

Sepang International Circuit (SIC) chairman Datuk Mokhzani Mahathir said the organisers are getting inputs from consultants to see the possibility of holding a night race by next year.

This is just a part of a collaboration with Singapore Grand Prix Ltd, the organisers of the Singtel Singapore Grand Prix on Sept 26-28,
which includes a joint global promotions campaign.

“Our target is to have the race at night next year and the same consultants who are doing the lighting system,” said Mokhzani.
The chairman said it will not be the same lighting system used in Singapore that will be transferred to the Sepang Circuit,
as the requirements here are for a permanent system.

“It won’t be the same. Our lighting system will probably have to shine from further out, not within the circuit.
We are still studying all the factors involved,” said Mokhzani.

The Singapore GP is set to be the first ever night race, but Mokhzani there isn’t any reason the race should be seen as a rival to the Malaysian GP.
